Aikido is a weapon less system designed for self-defence. It is not competitive and non-violent. Circular movements cause an attacker's force to be used against them. The aim is to control and restrain an opponent rather than cause injury. This makes it a subtle and graceful martial art suitable for all. Anybody can practise Aikido, regardless of age or physical make up.
Sankenkan is the only club in the Nottingham area that is affiliated to the British Aikido Federation (BAF), and recognised by the World Aikikai Headquarters in Tokyo.
All Dan grades (black belts) within the BAF are internationally recognised.
The Style in Sankenkan is soft but effective, with emphasis on the principles behind Aikido as well as the techniques. Learning why and how 'moves' work is seen as very important, and the Martial side of Aikido is taught in harmony with the Artistic side.
The club is small, friendly and inviting. Everyone has individual instruction tailored to their level, and helping people understand and use Aikido is the highest priority.
